Giving up is easy

Good things come to those who wait. Inshallah. In God’s time. People say these phrases all the time to their friends or family whenever someone is going through challenging times. But when problems pile up and a solution seems so far away, we tend to get clouded with negative thoughts that everything appears so out of reach.

Earlier, our company in Dubai went out to play bowling for our employee engagement activity. I was supposed to meet someone in that event, a co-worker from another site named Francis, who is also a client of mine for my part-time job which is client referrals for real estate in the Philippines. I called my broker friend, RJ, and asked him to come after the event to help sell a condo since I'm not yet used to selling.

Francis came in an hour late for the event since he is from another location. When we talked, I learned that he would be going somewhere else after the event. Hence, I had to cancel the meeting with RJ.

I felt bad because I had my broker friend cancel his appointment for us. The plan was that i’ll invite all my kabayan friends who came to the event together with Francis. I asked 3 out of 15 other kabayans in our company, but nobody seems to be interested so I stopped at 3, which added to the frustration. I became so frustrated that I didn't even enjoy bowling.

After the event, we all ate pizza and cola. It’s just a single-sized pizza so I took 1 box and a cola. I was full after eating but there are still stacks of pizza boxes left untouched and I wanted to get some more to take home and skip preparing breakfast the next day. However, I was afraid that my colleagues would think that I'm greedy so I didn’t take any for myself.

When it was about time to leave, everyone was gathering around and saying goodbyes and taking pizza boxes so I went near the crowd, not to take pizza but to say goodbye to my friends. Really!

There was a girl at work that I really liked so I went near her to say goodbye. She was holding 2 boxes of pizza which she handed to me to take home. Indeed, when I least expected it, I got what I wanted. What I didn’t get are the possible clients I should’ve had if my planned meeting pushed through. Or her number.. Or a date with this girl… But at least, I got something I wanted today. Pizza! And hey! Tomorrow is another day!

Pushing for something isn’t necessarily bad especially if you want it so much. However, I learned that things really come to those who wait or when you least expect it, like pizza! So, when things don't go as planned, just take a minute to breathe and let things be.

If you keep on working day in and day out and you're not seeing any results, it will be frustrating, it will feel as if you’re just wasting your time, and that there’s no point in pushing so hard. But wait my friend. Just wait and just keep doing the work that needs to be done despite the challenges and rejections and the noes and all the negativity.

Giving up is easy. . . But if we want to succeed and provide a better future for ourselves and our family, EASY IS NOT AN OPTION!.

I watched a lot of motivational videos in the past and one speaker that stood out to me is Les Brown. One of his quotable quotes is this “The rough times are gonna come, but they have not come to stay, they have come to pass.” So toughen up and know that tough times never last, tough people do.
